Wait for S100 or buy cheap S95

  1. The title says it all. Time to retire my old Canon A620 after its fifth flooding (still works, but getting sick of surfacing to empty water out mid-dive).

Prices on the S95 are dropping prior to release of the S100, but will that be better UW?

One of these, in a Canon housing is about my budget at this point. I have an Inon D200 that I will continue to use, and the Canon (S95 at least) will allow wet lenses later.

    Thoughts?

    Thanks in advance.

  2. Going by your track record get the most flood proof one! ;)

Having seen a few of those floods first hand I have ever been in awe of "the little camera that would not die". Maybe you could

sell the movie rights of the amazing story? Either that or sell the Franken-camera for scientific research. Any money generated

would help you get a non OEM housing.

    Cheers,

    Jim.

  3. I know... Many times I have thought "if only Canon had built the Titanic".

    ;)

  4. The S95 is able to take excellent pictures and i am not sure if the S100 will do it so much better,

basically a 24mm lens and FullHD.

As you can het several wet WA lenses and dome ports and FullHD is not really usefull as this tiny camer is

not difficult to hold steady i rather would invest in a better housing than a better camera.

I am n the same dilemma regarding the G12 or G13, but i would go with the G12 for the above reasons even

if the specs for the G13 are not out now, but it seems that it will be the same canges as the S100.

  5. One thing to bare in mind is that the S100 as stated above is 24mm at it's widest vs 28mm of the S95. The 28LD mounts that Inon released for the more recent cameras are designed for a 28mm field of view. On the S100 if they keep the same lenses you'll probably have to zoom in to avoid vignetting. Inon only introduced the 28LD mount in the last few years to better cater for the new compact cameras with a wider field of view and now Canon have released an even wider field of view!

  6. I'm thinking one can catch some _really_ nice feeding/behavior videos

    at 640x480 video at 120fps.

  7. Normally, or from past experiences, does anyone know how long it took for manufacturers to make the UW equipments for new cameras?

  8. There will always be something newer and better coming around the corner, so whatever you buy today in the point-and-shoot range is going to be old news six months from now. For so many reasons you really can't go wrong with the G12, and if the S100 is in your price range, then why not just go for a G12? It doesn't have full HD video, but when combined with the Canon OEM housing it's a steal for the quality pictures that you'll get. The 720p video is pretty good as well.

    Just my 2 cents.

  9. The canon g series has at least 2 major flaws...

Class lagging auto focus! This leads to miserable underwater frustration when you try to take the shot, and it won't focus, and the fish swim out of the frame, and then it takes the shot...

The second major problem is in M mode, you are forced to do full manual flash exposure as well. Every other manufacturer has these 2 things independent, as they should be.

I suspect the s100 also has M mode with manual flash only, but do not know that for sure.

  10. Is the s100 faster focusing than an lx5? I suspect not.
