  1. Ikelite TTL for Olympus 5050/5060 Cameras

From January 17 thru the 21, 2004, I had the opportunity to test a prototype of Ikelite's new TTL system where the Olympus TTL control for the DS 125 or DS 50 comes through the hot shoe via a sync cord directly to the DS 125 or DS 50 strobe(s).

The results were outstanding. For the first time ever I got perfect lighting under almost every imaginable condition e.g. shooting under reefs, against the sand, against the sky, with cloudy skies, sunny skies, etc. without changing any camera settings during the dives! This TTL system really rocks!

What this means is that, out of the box, someone should be able to get good shots without knowing a whole lot about what they are doing i.e. use a standard My Mode e.g. My Mode 1 for manual camera operation, point, and shoot. And experienced photographers should be able to spend more time finding and composing subjects and get more keepers.

This TTL system will be standard on the new Ikelite 5060 housing. Yet to be decided is if this feature will be available on new Ikelite 5050 housings or as an upgrade to existing 5050 housings.

  3. Wow! It looks like it works really well. Great pictures too. Alex

  4. Great pictures. I can't wait. When can we expect to see production 5060 housings?

Also I note you used the INON add-on lenses, but I've heard these do not perform well on the 5060. Any comments?

  5. I think he was using the 5050

  6. Very nice...

Great shots. I just got a Inon Z-220 to use with my Oly 5050 in a PT-015 and know it will take some time to get a feel for getting my exposure right with the manual control.

Anyone know if there will be a TTL solution like this for the Inon?

  7. The Inon is a very capable TTL strobe, it's the Oly interface that's required. Inon have made a TTL interface for canon cameras, intigrated into the new housing, so any time soon.

There is also the optical link-up to consider.

Inon in manual will take you all of several minutes to master, once you get the hang of strobe positioning. Practice in a dim room at home using various types of surface texture and different colours.

  8. Great Stuff!

Looks like the 5060 has lots of advantages over the 5050 - no push and hold while twirling, to adjust aperature in A mode, considerably faster AF.

Hey Ike, are you going to offer a dome port for the 5060? If you did, I think it would work to always use the "macro" mode, since the virtual image would be closer than 30 inches...
