Swimming with Great Whites

  1. I was not aware that it was possible to scuba dive with Great Whites (in contrast to snuba in a cage, which always sounded boring to me).

Here is a really decent video about such an experience, shown on iCNN (which also hopefully will break the myth of "sharks are bad".

    No guys, they are majestic!

This link might get you there

  3. Isn't ireport for CNN a user uploaded video report? So basically it's limited in exposure and really can be used as a marketing tool? I've fixed your link but I think that video isn't aimed at reporting about the GW. Plus every time someone gets bitten by a GW surfing or swimming, it's these sort of videos which give people ammunition to say there is conditioning etc. Sticky subject.

  4. Amos has been highly criticized for starting this 'swimming with the whites' new practice. Been to Guadalupe 3 times now and would have loved to be able to get out of the cage. Eventually someone may get hurt but diving has its risks. This is one I would take.

  5. I was fortunate enough to join Amos and swim outside the cage with the Whites and would gladly do it again! I know it's caused a big stink among the operators, but the sharks are not aggressive and keep their distance from the divers, so much so that it's tough to get your strobes close enough to get a decent shot. My 2 cents.

  6. That is on my bucket list

  7. The deep platform on the Solmar at Guadelupe is pretty much an open platform, that sharks can swim right through it if they choose to, and divers can wander out if they choose to. For me that was a nice compromise.

At Guadelupe one is in deep water so I'd be a little concerned about a shark coming from below when viz is suboptimal

  8. Loftus, On the Solamar, are you on scuba or umbilical?

  9. It was a few years back, but pretty sure it was umbilical

Paint eyes at the bottom of your fins and behind your head!. :)

Are Great Whites not attacking preys from below when the prey is paddling at the surface? In any case, I would not bet on the sharks to not be aggressive and keep their distance for ever. They might be gathering information at this stage... So I would definitely be hyper-cautious in the water! But what a winning video (when shot properly)!

As a side note, this is not a new thing as some divers practiced this approach during the shooting of "Oceans". I don't think we get to see divers with Great Whites in the US version, but I remember having read this (or maybe that was in the making of DVD?). Definitely gutsy from a dive operator point of view.
