Besides the EOS-C300 launching, the Canon event also quietly showcased a 4k camera housed in a 1DX body. This camera can shoot 24fps MJPEG at 4k resolution( with a FF sensor but shoots at APS-H resolution). That means it's a 1.3 crop, which is right between the FF and the S35/APS-C sensors. Nothing much else was said but it was shown with a 1DX body.

I'm quite interested in this, for the smallish (compared to Red etc) form factor and the 4K. But how good it MJPEG as a codec?- I'm not really familiar with it. Is it basically a series of jpegs with no interframe compression? How does it compare to other codecs?

MJPEG is great if the mbits are high enough. Like everything else, it really depends on the amount of compression, ie mbits and resolution. Think of it as 8mp jpeg at 24fps. It's not the most efficient and the color space issues like YUV to RGB, especially with REC709. It's also 8bit only! I'm also wondering if they are going to do MJPEG2000 vs the older MJPEG.
Some catalogs use MJPEG as archival codec.

Thanks Drew- will be very interesting to get more details and have a look at some footage from it.
