60D verses 7D Uptop

  1. Done quite a few commercial stills and video property shoots from Victoria to NSW and Queensland now.

I must say, once you go with a swivel rear LCD you will never go back to a fixed one.

The little 60D has never overheated once unlike my 7D.

Watched a guy who was with me at one property with his costly 5D struggle to get shots squatting down behind the fixed LCD.

There are shots I have taken that would of been impossible with a fixed rear LCD.

Another interesting fact is I only set it on Medium Raw as Full Raw is way too large and over the top.

Why do you need to take 18 meg RAW images.

Also I hardly ever use the viewfinder any more, live view makes taking great images a piece of cake.

It's fantastic you can go from tripod stills to steadicam video in seconds.

It has enabled me to walk into large mutli million dollar commercial properties, shoot a ton of stills and videos and out the same day.

Off to the Torres Straits next with the little 60D to shoot a new school.

  2. The articulated screen is why I've held off and off and off on a 7D in the hope that there will be a mkII with one. Would've plumped for a 60D but I like the extra weatherproofing of the 7D, as well as the man-sized body. Just told my mate last night to get a 60D though. Seems like a brilliant camera for the price point.

  3. There isn't much difference in video quality throughout the whole Canon range from 500d to 1d. Sure the footage looks different, but you wouldn't necessarily say that one was better than the other.

  4. Yeh, comparing it to my 7D its pretty much the same quality.

Thinking of getting a second 60D as a back up now.

Just ordered one of these for some time-lapse.

    Cheap as chips...

I really like my 5D Mark II. Bought it a couple of years back because the Scarlet was still delayed ;) Very very happy. Add the articulating screen and a bit more to the next one, and I would probably grab it in a heart beat :)

The newer ones rock also, but the full frame in low light is sweet (acknowledging the limits of course, but got so many shots I never could have otherwise...)

  6. So have I got this right... the 7D and the 5D mkII are dustproof/rainproof and you can pretty much drop them in a puddle and they still work, whereas the 60D you can't. Right?

Wags, any disadvantages you find with your 60D compared to your 7D? How about the smaller body size?

  7. Disadvantage would be it does not look as flash as the larger cameras and its not full frame, so what?

For a work horse with a good lens like the Tokina 11-16 the smaller 60D wins out for me due mainly to its swivel LCD and you can manually control audio.

I have had the 60 out in the rain, still works.

Most tripod based video and still shots taken of property the camera is lower than eye level so you can just swing up the LCD instead of squatting behind it.

Have it swung out when using the viewfinder as to not smudge it with your face/nose.

7D = Impossible to take shots of a room with the tripod hard up against the wall, swivel LCD no problems.

Low ground shots = lay on the ground or with the 60D just flip up the LCD.

If there was a huge jump in quality I would say go for the larger brothers but for day to day use there is not much in to justify having the larger ones.

And its only like a 1K camera if it gets destroyed.

  8. Well another gig done, 60D never missed a beat out in the Torres Straits hot and steamy tropical sun.

The flip screen was a life saver for many shots from Heli shots to night shots to internal building shots to over head indigenous dancing shots.

Would of been stuffed with out it.
