transfering files Mac to Windows

  1. Hi all,

I am now contemplating moving back to Windows from MAC, however I was wondering if anyone has a tested way of moving/converting files from one platform to another... My MBP took a soaking care of my little daughter (bless her) so I will need to remove the HDD first as there is no hope for the rest of the laptop...

Anyhelp will be happily received, more info can be provided :D

  2. I use both Windows 7 and OSX extensively and move back and forth all the time with data. What data are you thinking needs conversion?

Most data should move from OSX to Windows with no issues except for the OS-specific program data, for example iMovie, Final Cut Pro and Aperture. If you are using any of those products, there is no migration for the metadata.

If you are already using Adobe Photoshop, Lightroom and/or Premiere on OSX, projects and catalogs will readily move back and forth between the two using their export tools. Jpegs, Raw data, .mov and .mpeg, .mp3 files move easily between the two.

With Windows 7 all your data is now stored in a "Users" directory (wow, just like OSX :D), so it shouldn't be a big deal to use a USB drive to move the data.

    good luck,

    John

  4. What format exactly are your files in? What NLE are you thinking of using on Windows?

Windows will happily read ProRes, M-JPEG etc. (but can't encode to ProRes).

Some rave about the Avid DNxHD Quicktime codec as being the best codec for transferring files between Windows and Mac, as it can give as good quality as you want and avoids possible gamma-shift issues.
