ULCS vs. Loclne arms

  1. Can still photographers use locline arms for their strobes? Can videographers use ULCS arms and clamps for their video lights?

It this not allowed due to some legal restrictions or would it cause some fissure in the space-time continuum? :) or perhaps send traditionalists off screaming in horror?

  2. My only beef with Loclines is they squeak when adjusting, and for stills you do more adjustment I think than in video (and scare away the fish you were just preparing to shoot).

But I'm not aware of any legal issues. Just make sure the arms have at least 16 sections in most states (13 might be acceptable in TX) before screwing them on.

  3. I have yet to been arrested for using locline arms.

I dumped my Loclines (got them with my first light set and could not stand them) and just use ULCS for both and space-time seems to be fine still. BRB, got a Tyranasaurus outside my window and want to get a shot before he leaves.

  5. Love the locline arms - no issues with squeaking - quick and easy to place the sobes where you want and with one hand.

  6. As a user of Loc Lines I would concurr with above.

What I dont like is not so much the squeak, but the ease at which you could knock ur strobe out of its fixed position.

Also, not much good for heavy strobes such as the ikelite DS-125 etc.

What I do like is the ability to do rapid strobe position and placement.

They are cheaper than a set of arms.

Would love to try diving with a rig using ULCS, just to see could I be persuaded otherwise. :-)
