Trying to understand Canon hotshoe signals

2 posts
  1. Hi,

Noticed yesterday when diving that my right hand strobe was outputing more light than the left.

(I shoot a canon 5d2 with Inon z-240, through a Hugyfot housing. All TTL electronics are disengaged and the housing should be rigged directly ie from the hotshoe, via the PCB to the nikonos bulkheads. To my understanding however the PCB shouldn t be invloved in signal modulation in any way in this setup)

Once at home I set up a test to control this. It is indeed as I observed and through elimination I have found that the issue is down to the PCB output. If I swap the indivdual outputs at the PCB, for light and right strobe respectively, from the weaker strobe is now on the right.

I can t quiet get my head around this as my understanding was that in manual mode the strobe was only using the trigger and ground signals. This would fire the strobe, when the signal was detected but all output should be managed on strobe end. Clearly this isn t the case as if it where the strobe would output the same as soon as a trigger was detected.

Can anyone cleverer than me set me straight please?

    Thanks Erol
