I personally think Technicolor Cinestyle is a great profile for underwater use. Controls highlight details very well and also controls shadow details. My only complaint is blacks aren't black but nothing a LUT curve or some post can't fix. If you do a search on google, you should find LaForet's detailed prep for Cinestyle.
I was using Technicolor Cinestyle on my 7D mostly for topside filming until Marvels Cine Picture Style v.3.4 came out.
Marvels Cine claiming more dynamic range then Cinestyle (I'm not sure about this).
This is the clip from last trip to lembeh. All footage shoot with Marvels cine style and color grading on Adobe CS5 & Sony Vegas.

Thanks for any tips about color grading! ![]()

Nice film. You have some beautifully executed shots, and you've captured some great subjects and behaviours. But the video has high contrast with a lot of blown-out highlights. Your 7D shoots the whole gamut of luminance from 0 to 255 (I downloaded your video and checked it on the Sony Vegas scopes). On most viewers' systems, the Adobe Flash Player used by Vimeo, YouTube etc. will map 16-235 out to 0-255. This means that the luminance range is "expanded", and any detail outside of 16-235 will simply get clipped to flat black and flat white. So you need to map ("squeeze") your 0-255 to 16-235 before you render and upload. In Sony Vegas Pro you can do this with the "Computer RGB to Studio RGB" preset in the "Levels" or "Color Corrector" FX. You can also use a Color Curve such as this. Simply highlight the anchor point and use the arrow keys on your keyboard to move them 1 click at a time (so you click the lower left anchor point 16 times up, and the upper right anchor point 20 times down), then adjust the tangents:

Even better, grade each clip individually, referring to the video scopes while you do it.
More reading/viewing about Sony Vegas levels and the Adobe Flash Player luminance issue: link1, link2, link3. Other NLEs may handle "broadcast-illegal" levels automatically. I don't know.
I'm very interested to know what lens, settings and housing you were using with your 7D. The depth of field is very shallow and it looks like you had a difficult job with focus. Could you have used a smaller aperture?
Hi Nick,
Thanks for the input. I followed your document (Levels Fix & Debugmode Frameserver->AviSynth/QTGMC->MeGUI/Nero-AAC/x264 workflow) and it's worked out really well.
How to Render High Quality Video for YouTube and Vimeo from Sony Vegas Pro
I must have missed this video the first time round.
For curiosity sake I'd love a breakdown of lenses, tripods, lights etc that you were using.
Excellent film! ![]()
Cheers, Simon

Thanks Simon,
All footage taken with Canon 7D (60mm, 100mm, Inon bug eye lens) in Nauticam housing, 1 x SOLA 600 & 2 x 1200 lights, Xit 404 Underwater Tripod.
EunJae Im, Glad my article was of help. Have you re-graded and re-encoded this film at the same Vimeo URL or have you used my method for a future film?

Yet replaced file.
I'm still playing (grading & encoding) with bunch of different projects. ![]()
I just used the Marvel setting for a shoot and really like it. It was for a topside shoot but I much prefer it over the Technicolor.
OT, I did lens cap noise test on my Canon 7D with Marvels Cine picture style.

A really nice example of how the ISO multiples of 160 definitely hit the sweet spot on the 7D.
