tadpole fish?

6 posts
  1. Hi all, can anyone i.d. this fish?

I always see them at night but they're usually much smaller and are normally in cracks in the rocks. This photo was taken inside the Um el Faroud wreck at Zurrieq in Malta at night.

A friend said it might be a tadpole fish but I've never heard of one and can't seem to find them in the i.d. books

    Any clue please?

  2. We call them brotula here. Will just google an English name. Common in the caves. I guess it likes the wreck for the same reason.

  3. great Alex, thanks for the i.d.

Black brotula seems to be the closest thing to a common name I've found

  4. Just for info - Tadpole Fish is the common name (per Fishbase) of Raniceps raninus - a more northern but similar looking species

  5. ah ok, it does look similar so my friend wasn't far off (other than geographically!) thanks Jim
