What species of dolphin are these?

  1. Does anyone know what species of dolphin these are? I shot them near Phuket in Thailand in the Andaman Sea, Indian Ocean.

For more detail watch the video on the YouTube page and choose 480p or 720p.

  2. Hi Nick, there is a frame at 4 seconds that suggests it is a type of humpback dolphin judging by the ventral edge of the dorsal fin, though the colouration is a bit dark. Just my initial reaction.

  3. Difficult to tell but with the white tip rostrum and curved dorsal, and the size judging from the bow and your foot :B):, I'd guess spotted dolphin, probably pan tropical, Stenella Attenuata. Was there a very distinctive line on the body between the top and bottom side of the torso? I sorta see that but it's difficult with a top down view.

  4. Thanks guys. I'm going with Stenella attenuata as the best guess.

  5. Someone replied that they are Steno bredanensis (rough-toothed dolphins) because of the lack of a crease between beak and forehead. After closer study and more research I think they're probably correct.

  6. That's actually a good id actually. However, next time...jump in the water!
