Do you mean consumer digicams only, or all digital cameras? I switched to an SLR about two years ago (Canon D30, recently upgraded to D60) after growing to really hate my old Sony S70. The shutter lag with the D30/D60 is nonexistent. There is focus time, but that's pretty fast in most situations and if you pre-focus or set a manual focus distance there's no measureable lag.

I also have a Canon S40 and it's pretty fast, but there is a noticeable lag you have to deal with. It's particularly bad u/w, I assume due to poor light/contrast. I cannot wait to get my d60 housed!
