Solar Panels for expedition

  1. I'm planning an expedition right now to some very remote areas. We'll need to charge batteries for (1) 3CCD camera, (2) LED video lights, (1) Canon 5D, (2) YS-250's. Additional charge for random bits would be nice, but the main focus needs to be on getting this gear charged. 4 days at site. 7-8 dives total.

What are your thoughts? Do you have any experience with Solar panels that can handle this load? What brand? What kind of wattage would be required? Any help or additional points are appreciated. Trying to see if it makes more sense to spend the budget on extra batteries or the panels....

    Thanks!

  2. I used the Powerfilm F15-3600 60W with a cigarette converter and extension cord. It won't charge a MacBookPro 15/17" while running but will do so if the MBP is sleeping or off.

Most prosumer cameras have 12V adapters for cigarette lighter chargers. I'd still invest in the spare battery and charge one while using the other. The problem is with your amount of equipment, you'd have to spend about $2k worth of panels and if you get a bad cloudy day... you are down to 30% efficiency or less.

There are 360W foldable panels and I've been on locations where we had over 3kW but that was over weeks and battery assisted.

Unless you need to roll for a long period, I suggest you just get 1 battery per 2 dive for lights, DSLR and strobes and 1 battery x 3 dives for video since most 3CCD camcorders have big capacity batteries that last 3 hours.
