I'm new to underwater photography & have a Olympus Z4040 & DS-125 with TTL sensor. On the first dive trip everything went fine but on the last trip the stobe kept firing independantly & randomly when i had decended to 5M.
I checked the O rings immediatley & didn't see a problem. I later tried to replicate the problem by immersing the kit in a big bucket of water but everything seemed fine. The space between the stobe body & battery & the inside of the connector to the stobe body stays dry.
The next day, i took it down again with the same results.
Does anyone have any suggestions as to what the problem might be?
It may be a mechanical malfunction. But it is also possible at a depth of 5 meters to fire a DS 125 connected to a TTL sensor accidently when the sensor is pointed at the Sun.
Did it continue to fire randomly below 5m?
Light fluctuations by wave action can cause sensor to trigger the strobe at shallow depths which is one reason for the sensitivity switch. The other usual cause of auto firing is water in the sync cord or connections which you indicate were dry............
Hi Neil I also have this problem wher coming near or at the surface or "diving" in sunny shallow pools.
You can reduce it by lower the sensibility of the sensor (you have to test it but my experience is that a very low sensibility is enough). I also shut my flash off before coming to the surface and dont out it on before descending.

Thanks for the suggestions. Yes, come to think of it it could have been light fluctuations. Fearing flooding i didn't continue either dive when the problem arose so i can't comment on problems at deeper depths.
Anyhow, thanks again for the feedback, i'll follow through on my next dive trip in Easter.
Cheers!
IKe: Maybe you should put something about this into the Manual of the TTL Sensor. This also confused me big time in the beginning.

Yep - I`ve also had this problem. It was, as Ike says, the sun. Turn down the sensitivity in the TTL sensor
