O-ring help

4 posts
  1. I just purchased the marine pack for my DSC-P1. I could not find a new one so I was forced to get one from Ebay. It is in great condition & it tested ok without the cam in the pool. However, I do not have the grease for the o-ring. I called Sony & was told it is a silicone based grease & they no longer sell it and there is no Sony replacement.

What type can I use? I did the test with silicone from my local dive shop. I have also purchased a new o-ring from Sony.

    Please help!

    Thanks,

    Chris

  2. The most Important thing to find out is what the oring is made out of so you can find a compatable grease. If you put regular silicone grease from a dive store on a silicone oring then the oring will swell in time and not be reliable. A few things you can do:

    1. send the oring (not the swolen one) to a seal manufacturer to have them tell you what type it is and what grease is compatable.

    2. if you live close to a seal manufacturer take them your housing and have them fit it with buna-n orings (the standard black ones you usally see in diving) so that you can use regular dive shop silicone.

  3. I am headed for the Bahamas Sunday. Will I be safe using a new o-ring and silicone from my dive shop for this trip? I won't be diving, just snorkeling.

  4. I don't know how long it takes to ruin them. But, what you can do is compare the oring with a regular one that you can find at the local hardware store. Those are almost always buna-n as these are the most popular. If they seem to be the same elasticity then you will probably be ok. If the new one for your housing seems to be a lot softer and more stretchy then it is probably a silicone oring in which case if you had to use it I would use Sea&Sea grease.
