I use handbrake. It is free download, for windows or Mac. Very easy to use.

A very easy tool to use is DVD Catalyst. You just havew to choose your output device and it optimizes the mp4 for that device. A doddle to use.

I'm another for handbrake, works fine although not super fast

I have no idea what ProShow Gold does, but if it creates DVD video files, then Handbrake is a very good solution.

Handbrake is definitely the way to go. I use it all of the time with great results.

Another vote for handbrake, it's a flexible and free tool.

Hand break is super fast, set it to max out your CPU.
Maxes all 8 cores out here and you cannot do anything else while its running.
Its puts out very good H.264 too, better than any commercial encoder and its OPEN Source - FREE lol

I use Handbrake all the time, never a problem.

I've used Freemake to convert and to optimise but I should check out Handbrake.
