Help please with Ikelite

5 posts
  1. I'm about to take the plunge.

Keen diver, keen photographer (non expert on both!).

I am looking to buy the new Ikelitehousing for the F707.

    One strobe or 2?

    DS50 or DS125?

    Normal are or ball socket?

Help would be really appreciated as this is a lot of cash to spend....:)

  2. When you can afford, two strobes. 125s, if possible. Ball sockets for the arms. You can't believe how much better these are than the the arms we use to use. Typically you would just hold the strobe rather than use the old style arms. If the 707 is as senstive to light as the 5000 and money is a problem you could do fine with 50s, but you don't have the flexability of changing power.

  3. Sorry - Forgot to Login.

  4. I second Mark's opinion on the modular idea.

One other reason to go modular is that if you've got a new camera, a new housing, and two new highly adjustable strobes, you've got about a billion things you can adjust to get a better picture. That's cool, IF you know what to adjust. Even diving with one non-adjustable strobe, if you've never done much underwater photography, will be quite challenging. Start small, then grow into the additional components.

That being said, when you're ready, go with dual DS-125s on ball arms.

  5. "One strobe or 2?"

Start with one. You will be shooting in manual mode with this camera. Don't force yourself to adjust two strobes every time while learning camera controls, too.

    "DS50 or DS125?"

DS125 for sure. DS is very limited.

    "Normal are or ball socket?"

Normal arms are a pain in the a.. I replaced them with ball arms from ULCS. Buy ULCS or TLC arms instead of Ikelites. Much easier to adjust. Don't get carried away on arm length. You don't need it. I've seen wide anlge setups with two strobes seven feet apart. It's not necessary. Get two 8" or smaller double ball arms plus necessary clamps and bases. Positioning is the key for proper strobe use.

    It's just the beginning, sigh.......
