Mixing strobe arm standards

5 posts
  1. Hi,

I have the opportunity to by a nice set of carbon fiber arms at a good price, but they have "European standard" 24mm ball ends. Will those match 25mm/1" items like the YS-ball converter i need for my YS110 strobes?

Will they work seamless or could they become wobbly?

    Cheers

    /O

  2. I doesn't work well, 1" clamps will not work on the 24mm ball ,also the clamps with the o-rings that i am using do not fit good.

  3. Ouch, back to the drawing board then.

Doesn't the oring on the ball even out the difference somewhat?

    Is there a YS-ball 24 adapter available?

    Cheers

    /O

  4. I mixed 1" balls with o-rings (on my tray/handles) with a Sea & Sea Arm VII arms and clamps on dual YS-110a strobes. The Sea & Sea balls are bigger and the clamps grab at a slight angle. Been using them 3-4 times a week for 6 months with no issues.

The Sea & Sea tray that came with the arms sucked and I replaced it with another that has built-in 1" balls on top of the handles. Everyone told me it wouldn't work (my friends at Reef were adamant about this - LOL!) and I would have to spend and additional $400+ on a set of new arms...... I tried it anyways and see no problems at all..... if anything, the bolt on the clamp sees a bit more stress from the angle, but that's it. I can tighten them enough to not move either on land or underwater without having to crank them too much more than before.

My advice: Try it first before you plunk down more money.
