I need simple instructions for attaching lenses to the front of my Ikelite box for a Nikon p5100.
It seems odd that Ikelite make such a fine thread in nylon when every attachment is metal.
Cross-threading seems inevitable if I haven't already.
Any thoughts on how to avoid it- there isn't a definite click or orientation when turning counter-clockwise and I'm most certainly not going to try this underwater...
I always screw things backwards until I feel them catch then
I screw in normal direction.
I put grease on the threads for less friction and wearing out.

Yes, that is the way to do it with any tread, but especially with treads of plastic or very fine treads.
Screwing backwards gives you a tactile feeling that the tread locked in place and is safe to screw on.
I don't think that grease is a good solution as it may aggravet the problem of cross-treading as the necessary
force for screw in it on - either right orwrong - will be reduced and second the grease may get on the lens with a terrific
impact on the pictures.

I noticed that problem as well. I have just been as careful as possible, stopping straight away when you notice it is not in the right tracks. I was scared of slicing the nylon threads of the housing off, but after more than one year (of a steady few dives a week) and a loooot of changing lenses everything still works OK luckily.
