Need new compact for land use

6 posts
  1. So my trusty Canon S90 bit the dust (from about six feet up) and is non-responsive. Looking for a replacement for land use. Not really interested in housing the replacement at present. Saw that the LX7 was just announced. Worth waiting for, or go for a S100? Also intrigued by the Sony RX100 but wondering about RAW support, etc., and the Lumix f1.4-2.3 lens is attractive. Have a $100 Sony gift card that has been sitting around for over a year so this might be an opportunity to actually use it. Would really prefer to stay within the realm of "pocketability" for this one. Have the Canon 40D and lenses for more serious stuff. Thoughts?

    Thanks,

    Mike

  2. Cant help you with the choice making but check the canon loyalty program. They usually allow a trade in of dead cameras for new ones @discount. I traded a drowned 1ds for a 7do for under $1100. They are usually refurbished stock though.

Out of the three cameras mentioned, Sony RX100 has an 1" sensor, which is 3X larger than the 1/1.7" used by the other two hence better high-iso IQ in RAW and JPEG. See the difference yourself - http://www.imaging-r...OMP/COMPS01.HTM

    Both RX100 and LX7 feature 1080 60p HD vs. S100 1080 24p.

    Both LX7 and S100 have 24mm WA vs. 28mm for the RX100!

RX100 is only a little thicker than the S100 so it is pocketable and is about 40% smaller than the LX7.

  4. Thanks. I've read the specs so I get the part about the sensors and the sizing. I've also read a lot of reports about quality issues with the RX100 lens (i.e., manufacturing variation leading to "good copies" and "bad copies"). For what I've done in the past with the S90, I've not been disappointed with the image quality. So maybe that is still the best way to go for a pocket "point and shoot" for me. The price difference is not insignificant.

  5. Canon G1X. I use one.

Thanks for the input. However, since this is second to my DSLRs, I like the compactness of the S100 and RX100. The size thing can be a slippery slope, what with there always being a better camera just slightly bigger than the last one, but it is what it is. So, I went by the local Sony store to try out the RX100. Nice piece of kit. Feels very well built -- controls operate well. Not much bigger than the S90. So, I used the gift card and bought it. We will see how it plays out, but I like it so far, and Recsea just announced a housing, not that I'm headed that direction any time soon! Biggest negative for me so far is that Sony introduced the camera but the external battery charger won't be out until fall. Pretty stupid, if you ask me. Good news is that there may be aftermarket alternatives that will work.
