Substrobe AI/N + Manual Controller

Hi,

Hopefully some kind soul can help me out. I've got a pair of old Ikelite Substrobe AI/N strobes that I picked up and was hoping to use these as off camera strobes for lighting caves and wrecks.

The strobes seem to work well when fired via an Aquatica housing off the hotshoe of a 7D. When connected to a standalone Ikelite manual controller, and triggered optically, they won't fire. I've tried the TTL, 1/2 and M settings on the strobe but no joy.

I don't want any TTL out of these retro units, just full dump triggered off the manual controller optically by the one camera strobes. I tried various manual controller dip switch settings, trying 50/125 and P/No-P but still no joy.

I just heard back from Ike support so thought I'd answer my own question for the archives.

It appears that the manual controllers only work with the digital substrobes.

So would a standard topsides optical slave trigger in a wp box give you the first link in the chain.

I think this is what you may be looking for. It is the original Ikelite TTL Slave unit that worked with the AiN and Ai strobes. I have 2 AiN's and had one but sold it to a cave diver last year who wanted to do exactly what you are taking about I think. Can't remember the part number but pretty sure this one on Ebay is right. Orange not black. Maybe ask Ikelight again about the early model part number. Someone here on Wetpixel might have one laying around.

It was no big deal, a mate the Substrobes as he needed them as primaries. I'll either run my Inon's on camera via a hard sync chord on the 5d3, or get another pair of DS 125/160s.
