Changing strobe color balance with gels

4 posts
  1. Anyone have any experience with gels to precisely change color balance.

I have just won a Sea & Sea YS-250 which is a nice strobe and I want to use it for a pool shoot. I have been using Subtronics, but they are so unreliable it's time to start phasing them out. So I want to get the 5100K light of the Sea & Sea adjusted to the 4300K or so of the Subtronics for my pool shoots.

Anyone have experience using gels on strobes to precisely adjust color balance, recommendations for gel brands etc also welcome

  2. Jeff - I don't know what Subtronics you have - but most of their strobes are 4800K.

Only their old strobes are 4300K. Most strobes they have made in the last 10 years have been 4800K.

I'd test both in controlled conditions underwater and see the real K difference between them. Then you will know how much you need to warm them up - if you want them to match.

p.s. You can also have a look at this (it is currently unlinked on my website):

  3. I use Lee 223 filters to bring my strobes to 4400.

    Here's a calculator from Lee:
