  1. Avatar photo -- Nemo and his Dad

Cybergoldfish had asked that I post my avatar picture ... so here it is.

The photo was taken in the Solomon Islands last fall on a 2 week live-aboard with Bilikiki Cruises. It was my first time with a digital camera, and if you asked my shipmates they would say I was obsessed with the clownfish :)

I took hundreds (literally!) of photos of clownfish. Whenever I was hanging out at 15-20 feet at the end of a dive, there would be an anemone nearby beckoning to me. I would make it a long safety stop and take a few dozen clownfish photos. I found them to be a difficult subject, since they dart around a lot and my CP5000 is slow to focus :(

My other Solomons photos are in a gallery. Critiques are welcome!

  2. Very nice, and you've captured the detail in the whites too.

You're not the only one hooked on clownfish, as well as being cute and colourful they present a challenge to the photographer and the camera. regarding lag, a lot of patience and the ability to anticipate the next move is vital!

It is a challenge to not overexpose the white stripes, since they are very bright. The ability of the Tetra 5000 to dial down the strobes was an asset. I would review the histogram and watch out for blown-out areas (which are highlighted on the CP5000), then adjust the strobe output and shoot again (and again and again ...).

Agreed. I would often spend 15 or 20 minutes with the fish, and they would become slightly more comfortable with my presence. I would then prefocus (half press on the shutter) on an area of the anemone that they frequented, and wait for them to return to that area.

  4. large one

Not to be pedantic, but the larger one is almost certainly the female!

    :)
