Strobe with Inon WAL in dome unit

  1. Strobe with Inon WAL in dome unit

I have been going about trying to purchase a Z220 this week and was told that for the Inon WAL and/or dome unit I would need to use two Z220s to cover the angles. Is this true? Anybody out there using the Oly5050 in PT015 with the WAL and fisheye lens? How is the coverage with one strobe? I am a little dismayed to hear this seeing as how I would need to double the weight and bulk of my equipment(while freediving) as well as double the setup cost...any input would be greatly apprciated! Thanks!

  2. I have a 5050 with a WAL and dome and 2 Ikelite DS 125s. I can't imagine lighting subjects with this combination without 2 strobes. In fact, I wasn't happy with just one strobe when I had just the WAL.

For sample pics see Group 1 and Group 5 on the following page.

Also note Group 5 illustrates the awesome power of the Ikelite DS 125 Strobes which were able to light this sequence at the rate of 1 picture per second!

  3. I've always used two Z220 with the dome. We had a discussion of coverage awhile back here .

Some shots will work with just one, but I think two Z220 is the minimal weight and volume you'll need for good general wide angle coverage. We're fortunate that the Z220 can pack the power it does in such a small package. I can't think of anything that will give you the same coverage in a smaller weight and volume. The DS125 is more than twice as big not counting the sync cord and sensor.

  4. OK, then. Two it is. I can hear the plastic stretching already. I'll get the two Z220 over the Z220s even though I can't use the other features. I figure if I move up to a Canon in a couple years I can probably get some usage out of the focus light and such at that point. Do you have a page where I can see what arms and wiring you are using? I am looking at getting from www.uwdigitalcamera.com like you suggested before. I think I know which tray I want. I just need to know about the wiring and ULCS arms. Thanks!

  5. Details of my setup are posted here

I use a loc-line arm. I think the parts for the arms cost less than $50 for both arms.

  6. Wow---quite a setup you have there. I was looking at the setups they have at underwaterdigital and they are a bit pricey. It looks like a twin Z220 setup with ULCS arms will run me about $1600. That includes a lot though--twin Inon Z220s, optical cables, fisheye support tray, optional grip, and 2 ULCS arms...so I am off to rob a bank, I think...

    Thanks for the info!
