What sort of converters will I need and where do I get them? I got to thinking about all the stuff I bring that needs plugging in:
Strobe charger
Camera battery chargers
Laptop A/C adapter
Other AA charger
My God, I'm out of control!!! Do I just get some sort of converters or do I need 220v versions of any of the above?
Radio Shack will have all you need. Although I found a lot of my stuff was set up for 110-220 already so the only thing I needed was the plug converter to plug into the wall, not the power converter. I would take a surge protector just to be safe.
They are 220 I think. If we are 110, they are 220 or vise versa. Hell long day, I don't even know our voltage anymore.Yes, we are 110.
Basically just read on all your items like chargers and see what they rate too. If all have the 100-240 range you should be good without a converter and just need the plug adapters which are cheap. They allow you to go from the two prong to the two round ones etc. You can get 6 or 7 different ones to cover many contries for about $20
Power Strip Not Surge Suppressor
If you buy a surge suppressor in the US, it will likely blow up when you plug it into a 220 volt outlet. Instead just buy a power strip.
Todd's right about the Radio Shack converters just in case you do need to plug in a 110 plug. I bought a couple of these for about $25 each and used them all the while I was at the Hotel Santika in Manado. They worked perfectly for those things I couldn't plug in directly. They are very small (about 4 1/2" high) and don't weigh very much. They can also be used in England, Africa, Australia and the Philippines and anywhere else that uses the same kind of plug.
The power up there is VERY unstable and I had a lot of weird charging problems when I was trying to do this in my room. I finally resorted to using the power stations at Thalassa Dive Center which had a power backup device. I stayed at Murex a couple of nights too and at that time they shut down power entirely after everyone went to bed.
There's already a lot of good advice here. To get an idea of the type/shape of electrical plug you will need, check out this site:
You'll want something like the one listed as WA-9 or number 6.
Having just returned from a trip there, this morning I can confirm that is is 220/240 Volts. With European - round plugs, with two round pins. During my stay I found power very reliable.
