Sola vs Fisheye

6 posts
  1. Hi all,

I want to add some video light to my uw photo equipment (with is my main objective, BTW). So I want some small but good video lights, regarding power output/settings, burning time and good manuf. support.

I have narrowed the search to either a Sola or a Fisheye video light (more precisely, Sola 4000 - or the newer Sola 2000SF - and the Fisheye 3500). Here are the links:

    http://www.lightandm...ola2000vsf.html

    http://www.fisheye-j...3500/index.html

1 - What are your experience with those lights?

2 - Any special recommendations or some points that I should be aware off?

3 - For those of you with lots of experience in video, what's your opinion between two Sola 2000 or one Sola 4000?

4 - How about the Fisheye option, is it a really good one or not so much? Why?

    Thanks!

    Kind Regards,

  2. I own both Fisheyes. Presently I prefer to mount the less negatively buoyant 3500s though I intend to correct the weight of the 7000s using INON buoyancy arms. Both the 3500s and 7000s possess a fully adjustable output either incrementally or progressively. Burn times are good for lights of their power and there is a soft fall-off of illumination with no discernible hot-spot. Coverage is quite adequate for a wide DSLR rectilinear or even fisheye though the 3500s are probably better suited for macro work or, as I intend to use them, as fill lighting when using the 7000s. Colour temperature is on the cool side which is fine for the temperate water I frequent. Also, I like to use either as off-board lighting when shooting stills. Remotes for both models are a planned future release.

  3. Thanks for the feedback, Tim.

Fisheye says color temperature of the 7000 is between 6500 and 8000K. I guess that depends on the power output (lower power = lower temperature).

Regarding problems of the units? Are they problem-free?

How about pos-sales service of the Fisheye? Anyone had some past experience (good or bad) that wants to share?

    All the best,

  4. The post sales service I have experienced from Fisheye has been great. Initially I purchased the now discontinued 5000s and one of these quickly developed a fault and was promptly withdrawn, repaired and returned. Shortly after, I met Kaz Okada who advised that he wanted to replace both my 5000s with 7000s. As I had an upcoming use he happily deferred collection and subsequently sent me a pair of the replacement model. A1++ customer service IMO. As for product quality, I now own pairs of LED48s, LED500s, LED1500s, 5000s and 7000s and other than the initial fault with a 5000 none has missed a beat.

  5. Light and Motion says that their lights "Sola regulates its own voltage, so the lumen output remains constant during use"

Anyone knows if Fisheyes have this same feature?
