DSLRs/housings eyecups to help viewing?

  1. DSLRs/housings eyecups to help viewing?

I was thinking about how to make viewing through the viewfinder easier when my DSLR housing comes. Some new users of the drebel have complained that it is hard to see the whole frame in the viefinder.

Would one of these eyecups help in an Ikelite housing?

Has anyone tried this with the drebel housing? This will probably become clear once I get my housing but I won't have my hands on it for another month and a half at least.

  2. I had a similar question. I've been using a Canon Elph (S230) in a Canon housing also, and (obviously) I always use the LCD as a viewfinder. I had a cheap SeaLife RC 35mm underwater camera before that, and I found the viewfinder very difficult to use by comparison. Granted, at least with the digital SLR I can immediately afterwards discover what I took a picture of, but how difficult is using the DSLR viewfinder? (I'm planning on getting a DRebel in an Ikelite housing also.)

Oh, and UWPhotoNewbie, how well do you find the DS125 works with the Canon? I don't plan to get rid of my S230, and I was wondering how well this arrangement works, since you don't get a preflash. Do you block the internal flash? Have to do a lot of manual correction and multiple shot retakes?

    Thanks,

    -Chris

  3. I can't imagine that the eyecups would make the image any bigger. There's no optical element in them, and seem to only be for lining your eye up and keeping the sun out.

I find that it works very well with the manual controller. It doesn't work well with the TTL controller. The pre-flash on the Canon is too fast to duplicate. Ike no longer reccomends this and recommends the Manual controller instead. I recently got one and my topside testing was fabulious. I'll let you know how it really works after my trip in May.

I actually like the shoot/view/retake method. It gives me some manual control into my full auto camera.

I block the internal flash with a bit of aluminum foil stuck with tape inside the housing. It works great.

Thanks Eric. You are right about the image size, I was actually thinking that it might block the stray light into the viewfinder on the Ikelite housings. Perhaps this would make it "brighter". Is that the problem or is it just the image size. This would not of course be useful on aluminum housings.
