Whale Shark on the Seven Skies

  1. This past weekend I had another amazing encounter with a whale shark, this time on the wreck of the Seven Skies.

This whale shark was a relatively young female, cruising around the wreck of a supertanker, the Seven Skies, with an huge entourage of fish. Hard to tell but I guess that she's about 3 to 4 meters long.

Enjoy the 5 minute video: http://www.peterwalker.com/sevenskies.html

  2. Thanks Peter, really amazing. Any ideas why she was hanging around the wreck?

We often see them in that area, either near one of the wrecks or pinnacles, during September and October. Can't be for feeding because the water is quite clear during these months. One theory is that they meet for mating but no one knows for sure.

  4. I noticed in one part of the video the fish went almost vertical near Diverace. Do you think it was expecting to be fed ala oslob/cenderwasih style?

Yes, that's what I suggested after the dive. It looked like she was seeking a hand-out from the boat.

  6. Cool. Great vid looks like she hung around for a while. conditions looked decent too. not an easy dive this, especially for beginners.

I carefully pick the weekends that I go to the Seven Skies, trying to align with a half-moon. Then the currents are manageable - even with a large video camera. Last weekend was perfect. Great vis - about 30 meters. Zero current.

  8. Nobody else on this forum watched my video? How disappointing.

This is one of my popular vidoes ever with over 1500 plays to date.

But silence from my buddies on wetpixel... :(
