Need to upgrade - but to what?

  1. Need to upgrade - but to what?

    Hi

I'd appreciate some advice from those more knowledgeable and experienced than myself (which is likely to be most people on this site).

Here's the situation. For the last 3 years or so I have used a Sea & Sea MX-10 with YS-40 strobe for underwater and a Coolpix 995 for above water photography. In more recent times I have become increasingly frustrated with the low number of 'good' shots I seem to be able to get out of the MX-10 and on a recent liveaboard trip another diver had a housing for his 995 and got some great shots.

That decided me to get into digital for U/W and I looked into a housing for my 995 but was put off by the cost - US$700 plus. So then I thought I'd sell both the old cameras and buy a new Canon or Olympus with its OEM U/W housing. My desired criteria were:

    - something smaller than the 995

    - something with a bigger optical zoom than the 995

    - 4 or 5MP

    - fully featured but with ease of use as I am no expert and usually shoot in Program mode.

I looked around, read articles and am attracted to the Olympus C750/PT-018 combo. I really like the look and size of the camera and the 10x zoom (although I know that won't be of much use U/W). I was thinking of getting an Ikelite DS-50 strobe with TTL sensor to complete the package. I have read all the other posts on this camera and I'm starting to worry whether this is a bad choice. My questions are:

    - what is the view of the C750 as an U/W digicam?

    - there is mention that it does not have slave mode for the strobe. Is this correct and if so what is the consequence?

    - there is mention that you can't use TTL with super macro. What is super macro?

I don't tend to take a huge amount of macro shots. Maybe the odd nudibranch etc but I really like getting shots of fish, especially pelagics.

I'd appreciate any feedback/advise anyone could offer. I get a little lost with some of the technical jargon that some of the posts use.

    Thanks heaps

    Lee
