I am sick. When I took this photo last week in La Paz, on Los Islotes, I could see the scarring around the neck and noticed that (s)he held her head up so high.
I blew this photo up 1:1 today and can see the net still around her neck digging into her. I guess she is suffocating or being garroted.
I have friends in La Paz this week, maybe they can help this lion.
It's troubling to see sea lions and other marine mammals suffering because of entanglements in nets and fishing line. I've seen several sea lions with net and/or line entanglements. We saw one during our recent trip to Isla San Jorge off Rocky Point, Sonora. One of my dive partners accurately described it as heartbreaking.
I was reviewing my photos from the Isla San Jorge trip and noticed several photos of a sea lion with a gaping neck wound. This sea lion was still engaging in interactive behavior with us. I don't have a clue what made the hole in its neck.
