best dome for d800 cfwa with sigma15mm fisheye

  1. recently upgrade to d800 and nauticam houseing looking at 100mm zen and sigma 15mm fisheye combination for cfwa but i understand the lense shade needs to be trimmed on lense ,can anyone advise how much needs to be trimmed off the shade .I have been told the 170mm zen fitts the sigma 15mm with out trimming the shade ,would the 170mm be able to take advantage of the close focal distance of the sigma 15mm and would it be to big for ease of lihgting close sublects,i have not seen any reviews of this port for d800 any information would be great. Thanks Scott.

  2. ... looking at 100mm zen and sigma 15mm fisheye combination for CFWA... would the 170mm be able to take advantage of the close focal distance of the sigma 15mm and would it be too big for ease of lighting close subjects... ?

This has been discussed quite widely on Wetpixel, and FX cameras need big domes with wide-angle and fisheye lenses, otherwise suffering from a marked loss of sharpness at the edges of the image. Big domes, of course, make it impossible to light CFWA subjects when they are very close to the dome. I've tried a slightly odd Nexus dome, designed for an old Nikon kit wide-angle zoom which is a small segment of a large radius hemisphere, but it's far from perfect and needs a 1.5x teleconverter on my 15mm. I think that a middle-sized dome is probably the best option: ie one of the Zen 5" or 6" ports...

Sigma 15mm + Kenko 1.5x teleconverter, Nikon D800, Nauticam and Nexus dome for 18-70mm Nikon lens. Subject distance about 30cm from lens. Two Inon Z240 strobes.

  3. According to Zen the 170 dome has the same radius as the 8" acrylic ports. So the Sigma 15 will shoot fine with one.

I am on my way to Palau and am going to try it out with a Nikon 17-35 + 70mm extension. Not the best, but I will be shooting big animals without much in the corners with that setup. I'll use the Sigma or the Sigma + Kenko 1.4 + 20mm ext for CF/WA.

So I'll be posting more here, and on my sites about this in the near future!

  4. Thanks Tim for your reply thats the type of image i would like to take thinking about the 170mm zen but would like to see some images taken with a sigma 15mm fisheye with the 170mm zen combination most articles i have seen are useing the 100mm zen and trimming the lense shade. But after reading alex mustard review he says small domes will work but domes around the 6 inch size would give better results .

  5. hope you have a great trip jack, look forward to seeing some images from the sigma 15mm 170 zen and the sigma 15mm, kenko,170 zen combinations ,thanks for the info on the zen170mm
