Experiences with the Apeks WTX-D18 wing?

8 posts
  1. Hi gang!

I am looking at exchanging my good old 32lb OMS wing for something smaller and more streamlined.

I have been looking at the 18lb travelwing from Apeks, does anyone have any experience with it and do you know if it will fit the standard aluminum OMS plate?

Or do you have any other recommendations for a wing which is smaller than 20lb?

As always your help is much appreciated! :)

    -Morten

  2. Morten,

my main bcd is a Zeagle Ranger LTD, very sturdy and comfortable but heavy
I had a Hollis Travelwing and have a OMS Travelwing, both nice made and less than 5 lbs light wings.

The Apeks WTX-D18 looks nice, streamlined and made of 1000 Cordura

  3. This guy makes nice stuff, I dive one of his wings for 7 years now. Not a single problem so far. A friend has one for the doubles, also no problems.

If you need a smaller one, he makes a 12lbs wing as well. :)

  4. I own a WTX-4 (45 lbs) that I mostly use with single steel 15L and sometimes

with double steel 12L down to 60m. I have used it for a few years now and still

    looks as new.

This D18 might be a good product.

  5. ##Update##

If anyone out there are interested, I bought the Apeks WTX-D18 in May 2014 and have now done about 150 dives with it.

The materials are great, inflator is great, the wing is of course tiny but has enough lift to be used with my new 7mm semidry, yes I know its crazy to dive with a suit like that here in Bali but Manta Point and Crystal Bay gets damned cold in august/september!

I can release air from the inflator while remaining completely horizontal, something that was not possible with my old OMS wing.

All in all I am very happy with it and would recommend anyone who is not diving "overweight" and who are looking for a streamlined setup to go for it!

    Happy bubbles, Morten

  6. One might think they could go to the Apeks website and see the weights of each device, wing, backplate, etc. Then you could figure how light a system you could make. They list considerable information but no weights for the wings...just the lift weights. sigh...

  7. Thanks for the update !

  8. Dear Dave,

I never realized that the weight of the wing wasn't put up online.

I think that if you would be very concerned with weight then Apeks would probably be able to answer you that question if you would write them an email.

Since I work/live in Bali I almost never travel with my kit, so its not a huge issue for me.

I would check it out for you but I don't have a scale that would fit a wing, no matter how small it is :)

    Best regards, Morten
