  1. Adobe has shared a link to a YouTube video by Dave Helmly showing the "meant-to-be combination of the Mercury Playback Engine and the immense power of the hardware."

To quote: In this video Dave Helmly gives you a quick tour of Apple's New Mac Pro running Premiere Pro CC in various workflows including Multi Layer GPU Effects, 4K, Mixed 4K timeline, the power of Dual GPU Exporting vs CPU (software/CPU) , and finally GPU based Debayer for Red RAW R3D files. Also featured in the video are a quick peek at the new LG 21:9 ultrawide (weitwinkel) QHD Monitors , Promise Pegasus 2 Raid, LaCie Little Big Disk Thunderbolt 2 and more.Special thanks to Sony, Panasonic, Mammoth HD and Devin Supertramp for the use of their footage.

  2. I do think it'll be interesting to see how it performs compared to Nvidia's CUDA. There are a few plug-ins and other stuff that are optimized for CUDA and not OPENCL. I'm sure an update is due for the OSX version. It will be interesting to see if Apple supports OpenCL as well as Nvidia does with CUDA. I can't see them releasing an update every month for bugs or features.
Resolve and FCX does do well with the AMDs now. But without changeable GPUs, the Mactube limit that mid life upgrades like GPU and CPU. At least with dual GPU the 2009/10 MacPros can sustain another year or 2.

  3. Hook up four Nvidia GTX Titan black edition with 4 way SLi link. Kick any ass in 4K @ 60Hz!

  4. Err David, I don't think any of the mac pros have 4x16x Pci-e slots. What motherboard arw you running to have 4 x x16 slots? Hacking oh?

  5. Hackintosh.i know some think that's a sin. Only viable option at the moment to get my Asus 4K monitor running at 60hz and 4k res is pc with at least a gtx titan gpu.

  6. You can try this one for starters : EVGA X58 4 way SLI classified. Up to 7 Pci-express x16 slots. Or the EVGA X79 classified with 5 PCI-e. You can plug 4 GTX GPU cards to enable 4 way SLI system. You are going to need a PSU of 1200w or more.

Hackintosh using Maverick will not work with the 4K at 60hz. Maybe apple will have their own 4K display later then there may be software for it. I am using PC & Win 7 cough cough ! If you are attending ADEX then have a look. I have been running the Asus PQ321Q 4K monitor for a week now at 60Hz using the display port.

Actually, Mac Pro's CPU can be upgraded by users. The graphic cards are also designed to be interchangeable.

  8. I just got the Titan Black to drive my Dell 4k... But i'm only getting 30hz in the drop-down menu. How many Titan blacks are you using, David?

My 2nd Gfx card is a lowly GTX670... Have to wait for my next holiday for another Titan.

I got one of the new Eizo 277's as well... way nicer than the dell 4k.

  9. one GTX titan black will do. even your GTX670 will work if it has at least 2GB of Vram and a display port socket. Get the latest driver. You will need the Display Port 1.2 cable in MST(multi stream transport)mode. depends on you system Win 7 or 8 and either will need some tweaking to get the MST to sync at 60hz.

I hook up two GTX titan black with SLi 2 for my work on movement of traffic and pedestrain flow in a virtual city….for 4K video one Titan is more than enough.

    cheers

  10. David, 10.9.3 will have 60hz. As much as I hate it, WIN8 does 60hz and even renders faster with Resolve and Adobe CC (except for Photoshop, which annoys me!).

AY, that's a 3rd party "send it in" upgrade, not a plug and play like "normal" computers. I'm sure someone will figure out a GPU upgrade as well but sending the machine out is sometimes impossible. Design pros and cons!

Simon, are you running WIN or OSX?

Mac Pro uses LGA 2011 socket so it's easy to DIY.

  12. Drew. Yes and but, but no thunder bolt 2 or Hdmi 2. I like the mac pro bin but the next update will probably have full 4k support. Nearly sure apple is cooking up a 4k 'ultra' retina display or something.

Cheaper for me at the moment to just upgrade with gtx titan. The computer is chucking along nicely.

    Cheers

  13. Hey Simon

If your 4K TV is a Dell P2815Q then your are stuck at 30hz when you use full 4K res. 3840x2160. It could do 60hz refresh rate at 1920 x 1080. Hopefully Dell may have a future firmware upgrade. But by then even Seiki will have HDMI 2.

The Eizo 277 is nice colour reference monitor. I was thinking of getting one. I would like to know how accurately it self calibrates.

    regards

  14. I took the Dell UP2414Q, realistically I should have got the 32, I will get that later in the year I guess.

24" is too small for a lot of what I do on it. Making raw adjustments on there is a pain! The Eizo is great, but I have nothing to compare it to. When they are both calibrated (Eizo using the inbuilt calibrator, Dell with Datacolour Spyder) they come out pretty similar in terms of colour.

Running Windows 8 for now... No trashcan just yet.
