small hd dp4 or dive and see dnc-7

  1. I am currently looking for a external monitor solution for my bmcc.

It seems like right now there are only 2 options available. Either a nauticam hausing for the smallhd dp4 or an external monitor from dive and see.

Does anyone have experience with both monitors, or can recommend other monitoring solutions?

Since it's mainly to be able to do critical focus I am right now favoring the dnc-7 because of the bigger screen size, but I haven't found much information on actual screen used and screen resolution.

    Thanks

    Nihal

  2. Hi Nihal

I have. Dive and Sea monitor is good but the bulkhead need some mod before it could be attached to the M16 Nauticam bulkhead. It is also integrated rechargeable battery. Nauticam with the DP4 works well and the screen is pretty bright. There is also the option of attaching a EVF hood.

I have the Small HD Oled 7". Many battery choices. Give a me a bell if you want to see it. I am sure a housing could be made for it.

    cheers

    David

  3. You are over looking the Ninja2 due to its slighter worse screen than the DP4?

  4. Ninja 2 is a wonderful recorder/monitor. Great for many type of external recording options. In this case It may be a bit redundant since the BMCC is recording Prores and also capable of Raw 2.5k. Perhaps later when the Black Magic 4K finally comes out maybe the Ninja 2 could record prores proxies in parallel with the 4K in camera. As for just a monitor for my money I would prefer the Small HD Oled 7" screen. I am considering custom make a housing or maybe some manufacturer already have and just about fully baked in the oven.

there are other options (all very good) so I have no intention in naming them all and this is just my personal choice.

  5. Thanks David, I'll give you a ring in the next days. I'd definitely be interested to take a look at the dp7 since the smallHD dp7 oled looks indeed like a good choice. Especially if there was a way to connect via SDI, that would avoid me having to get a sdi to hdmi converter for the bmcc.

Since I anyway record in raw in camera the ninja2 would be indeed a bit redundant, it does look like a nice option if I compare it to the dp4. Actually in that case the Atomos Blade would be a more interesting contender considering the higher res display. But I guess there is no housing option for that model available yet?

    Hi Nihal,

To install the Dive And See M16 bulkhead connector to the Nauticam housing you do not need any mods.

You can see the SDI monitor DNC-7A (S2) with loop through option here: http://www.diveandsee.com/products/underwater-monitors/50

It works with BMCC, using SDI output.

From my experience with the 1.8 firmware hence it brings GREAN color peaking for focus & the one touch auto focus you don't need an other monitor to achieve good focus. Actually I I find the BMCC is better than the Ninja2 dull screen.

All you need to do is:

Set Monitor to video (this has nothing to do with Recording format) only for monitor,

Get a good shade or make your own for the BMCC monitor,

Set peaking by pressing focus button twice - pressing once is auto focus function

    Set highlight if required

BMD already released version 1.9 that has a histogram for the BMPC 4k and the BMCC should follow soon.

Unless one wants to record proxies at the same time, having an external monitor is not helpful for the BMCC setup. I don't know if you can record at the same time when you press the rec button on either BMCC/Ninja. BMD cameras don't send any triggers to recoding devices via hdmi or bnc :(. May be a loop through the LANC - may be - could help. Must be tested first.

  8. Hi Alex,

thanks for the info! That is great news.

In the end I had decided for a smallHD dp4 but it's good to know there's a 7" option out there now as well with actual sdi support. If I end up wanting to upgrade to a 7" the dive & see monitor is definitely on my list.

Thani, thanks for the advice! Yeah the green peaking definitely helps but I don't find the auto focus to be very useful though since it tends to be very slow on the bmcc.

For my style of diving & shooting I find having an external monitor helps a lot, since I can keep the camera slightly below me with the external monitor angled for better viewing. At the same time I have a better overview of my distance to subjects - (or rocks) -- before that I have managed to bump my domeport (and scratch it :/) more than once when using the bmccs built in monitor.

  9. Ny Nihal,

I am currently using WahooHD housing with Sony CLM-V55 monitor, and I am more than satisfied. Whole case is made from aluminium and you can choose what bulkhead you need, depending on housing manufacturer. I choose this one because I needed housing that can go over 100+ meters, and WahooHD depth rating is 450ft/140m... I am using it with Aquatica housing and Canon setup.

As you already said for UW video, external monitor is game changer... It is way more easier to record...

    Cheers

Marelux
