Ikelite D70 housing

  1. Ikelite D70 housing

According to Ikelite, not all of the hotshoe pins are connected to the bulkhead on the D70 housing. This will make it impossible to use this housing with a housed SB-800 in wired mode re-wiring the housing. The required modification would cause the system to become incompatible with Ikelite (and other) strobes unless an additional, independent bulkhead was installed. Connecting the wrong strobe to such a bulkhead could conceivably damage the camera.

There also seems to be a difference of opinion on whether the pop-up flash will fire in the housing (to trigger an SB-800 in remote-commander mode). If anyone has the D70 housing, it would be very helpful to know whether the pop-up strobe fires inside of the housing (it needs to be popped before the housing is closed). An SB-800 isn't needed to test this, I just need to know if the popup fires.

    Thanks!

  2. Ok, I have finally had a chance to do some testing with the new housing.

To answer this question difinitively, I've tested the pop-up flash in the housing and it doesn't work. :) The flash pops up partway but on the D70 if the flash is not all the way extended it won't fire. So no it doesn't work.

The flash only goes up a little bit with the hotshoe connected. The hotshoe plocks it partway. So I tried it without the hotshoe and it goes up a little more but not enough to fire. Sorry. No dice.

So it seems that there isn't much hope for the SB-800. Ikelite is the only clear housing and this one doesn't work.

On the other hand, it works quite nicely with dual DS125s.

  3. Thanks for the clarification :)

    Good luck with the system.
