Olympus 5050 and slave strobe

  1. Olympus 5050 and slave strobe

I have been using my Oly 5050 and Nikonos 105 in slave mode for several weeks. Because of 'particulate matter' in the water column I have the housing difuser taped over and try to pick up the flash from the camera to the side. This has been semi-successful - the strobe doesn't always fire.

What has been a much better success has been to use a fibre optic cable to trigger the strobe.

Now I know that you can go out and buy these but I have developed (lashed together) a more affordable option.

Take a 1.5 m long X-box games console lead (PS478 - Optical Cable from www.logic3.com) at £5.99 and cut off the ends. Then tape one end to the housing, pare down the other end and poke it through one of the holes in the diffuser nearest the lens and secure with more tape - the elastic band is the mark 2 security following my first dive.

I look forward to you smart folks to suggest how to upgrade the end attachments to a more professional finish.
