  1. Question for Canon DSLR shooters

I note an abscence of recent Canon threads around here...

Now a couple of weeks ago we were all (myself included) getting very excited about the shiny new Aquatica housings for the digiReb that several lucky Wetpixelers had just received in the mail.

So where are the photos? :D

I still haven't seen a photo from the famous new Aquatica TTL system. It seems to be commercially available, but I can't find photos or reviews anywhere (emailed Aquatica a while back and they said above water testing had been done and was working fine.)

My new strobe arrived in the mail today...very exciting, it's sitting on my desk now. Unfortunately I can't seem to work out how to plug it into my Ewa-marine housing. Looks like I might have to cut some holes in the plastic for the strobe cord and seal them up with gaffer tape. Only other alternative I've come up with is to buy a real housing.

Anyone tried the Ikelite 10D? I heard a rumor TTL support might be happening sometime soonish.

Any feedback from users of the Aquatica A300 or Ikelite Drebel or 10D housings about their experiences so far would be most interesting.

  2. Herb just got back after using his so I am sure we will hear about his experiences.

I hope to get mine wet in the next month and will be happy to give you my experiences also.

  4. I have the Subal C10 housing for my 10D. Somewhere over 3000 images taken with the setup. Lenses used: EF15mm FE, EF16-35L, EF25-105, EF 50mm Macro, Tamron SP 90mm Macro.

Fantastic housing, everything works right away. No fiddling or messing with controls that may or may not line up. It's the Mercedes Benz for the 10D.

  5. Nothing new from me. The stupid small craft warnings have made it impossible for me to convince any one to take me out 3 weeks in a row. :-(

I'm dying to get a hold of the Ike 10D housing. The release date posted on the web site has inched from May to June. That's totally understandable. Unfortunately, I'm the unhappy owner of a 10D camera and a D60 housing. In desperation I've started bidding on eBay for a D60. I can't bring myself to pay $3000+ for the Subal. I'm so conflicted. Maybe I'll buy meds instead.

  7. The Ike 10D would be a good affordible solution for us 10D owners. I don't want to pay for the 'mercedes. Subal either, although I'm sure it's a nice housing. Aquatica aren't doing a 10D housing so that pretty much leaves Ike. eTTL support would make this the housing to shoot with. This housing, BTW, was meant to be available last year - so I'm hoping to see it out very soon. If it is and has TTL, I think I'll be an Ikelite/10D shooter, otherwise it's Aquatica/300D for me (I really don't want to shoot with a 300D/Drebel if I can help it though!)

I read JayTreat's review - thanks for posting it Jay/NLAVD. I like your 50mm macro work. The 18-55 kit lens pictures look soft to me - I thought the lens would perform better than that.

I'm interested in Herb's experience with the DRebel also.

  8. i am looking for a new housing for my 10d as well.

anyone of you consider the sea&sea dx-10d?

i have an ike for my 5050 currently and really like it, but i have inon strobes and a 550ex.

i know that ike will have a cord for connecting inon to ike housing, but no s6 connection. and if the ttl support is similar to that of the 5050, then only ike strobes will work ,

so i am torn.... decisions decisions decisions :D

  9. Jay Treat's http://www.jaytreat.com/Diving/Photography/index.htm site has spectacular amount of information. Also see Chnristian Fries: http://www.ikelite.com/web_pages/friesphotos.html

We will have 10D and D60 housings when mold maker and molder correct a .020" dimension error. They don't leak, but error produces possibility they "might" and we can not run that risk.

eTTL will be available this summer, and will communicate with the camera even providing flash compensation just as a Canon strobe. We have hesitated to say much to avoid the inevitable furor about when and why delivery problems.

  10. Good to see a few Canon threads now! Was getting sick of reading about D70's etc

Ike, thanks for your input, it's always appreciated. You don't feel like sharing just a little bit of info about the eTTL plans for the 10D?

Oh, and will the leaky 10D wrong sized housings be available at a discount? Hey, I'm shooting with a EWA-marine at the moment, it would still be a step up :D

  11. eTTL will be available this summer...

I'm wondering if a 300D housing purchased before the inclusion of eTTL can be retrofitted. I'm also wondering if eTTL will be available for the 10D. Does anyone know the scoop on this?

  12. yes and yes............

  13. A local dealer was in contact with Ikelite on friday, and the news is that the the 10d housing will be available around june 21st, but eTTL will become available starting in the fall. I am just letting you know what I've heard, but if anyone, especially Ike has a more updated view, by all means please feel free

  14. 10D housing is probably July 21 not June 21. This is Monday and mold which we paid for months ago was to be sampled again last Thursday. I give up on making any more promises............

  15. I give up on making any more promises.....

Unfortunate for us, but probably wise in the end, at least if you wish to retain some semblance of sanity...

  16. I love my Subal C10. Yes, it was stupidly expensive but man it dives like a dream. I'm using the FE2 dome port with both the 15mm fisheye and 17-35/f2.8 as well as a FP75b flat port for my 50mm macro and the same flat port w/extension ring for the 100mm macro.

You can check out some photos from a recent trip up the BC coast last May here.

My only complaint is that the bayonet ports are REALLY tight. Subal says to put some silicone grease on them so I'll try that next time I'm out with it.

I'm considering adding the Ike manual controllers for the DS125s, and will probably do so later this summer. Too bad Ike's not coming out with external eTTL controllers - now that would be the bomb!

  17. Nice nudibranch photos Marty.

The Subal looks great. I haven't heard any rumours of E-TTL support for it though, which is a bit of a disincentive to me personally given its high price tag. I wonder if you could install one of those TTL cards that German fellow is building?? (forget his name)

Ike, are we still looking at a 2004 release date? :? C'mon, I want to buy your housing...please build me one!

BTW Ike, you've mentioned retrofittability of your E-TTL circuits to 300D/10D housings in the future. Is this likely to be doable by the user or is it dealer only?

I got the EWA-Marine wet on the weekend, but have been concentrating more on SCUBA than freediving in recent months, which the EWA-Marine is unsuitable for. I thought I'd have my 10D housed long ago... it's really pretty frustrating, but I guess I'll get there eventually.

  18. We received actual housings for the Canon 10D and have started nailing them together which will take several weeks to get from drilling holes to water pressure testing. Will introduce eTTL when available. Retrofit may require return home if we elect to machine a pocket into the back as we do on the Olympus housings.
