Worm From Monterey

  1. Couldn't find it in my Intertidal Invertebrates of California. Looks like a Bobbit worm, but these are not tropical climes.

  2. No guesses? It's actually a little more similar morphologically to this annelid polychaete worm found near deep water thermal vents than to Eunice aphroditois. (I found the image at themagazine.ca).post-23883-0-38930100-1409967801_thumb.jpg

  3. Thanks to the kind intercession of Dan Gotshall of Sea Challengers, who passed on the image to the California Academy of Sciences, the considered opinion seems to be, "this is definitely the ventral surface of a Nereididae...(and not Eunicidae like the bobbit worm), however it's difficult to guess which species from an image of the ventrum only and without the posterior segments shown (looks like the size is realtively small based on the neighboring barnacle and Corynactis)....It could either be Nereis grubei or Platynereis bicanaliculata (more likely the latter, based on its color, the length of its tentacular cirri and its habitat)."
