SB80DX vs. SB800?

  1. SB80DX vs. SB800?

Anyone have any insight into how a SB800 will perform underwater relative to a SB80DX (given that Subal just announced availability of their flash housing for the 800)?

  2. Hi oneyellowtang,

It is very dependant on what camera you have. The SB800 is capable to iTTL, Nikon's new improved version of dTTL. But iTTL can only be achieved by newer Nikon Digitals, such as the D2H & D70.

It also raises the question of how important TTL (or iTTL or dTTL) is for UW photography with digital. My opinion on that one is that it is nice if you have it, but not essential.

  3. SB800 is backwards compatible so that it will work the same as an SB80dx on a Nikon D100. The SB800 has a slightly lower guide number. I suspect it will identically to an SB80dx used with a D100.

The SB800 and a D70 should do a better job in TTL mode than a D100 with an SB80dx. The dTTL of the D100 had some issues.
