Any ideas what this little fish might be?

  1. About two inches long, found at 40 feet in Cenderawasih Bay, Raja Ampat. Could find no barred damsel-like fish with yellow ventral and pectoral fins on web or in books. Thanks!

  2. I reckon it is a juvenile Black-banded Demoiselle - Amblypomacentrus breviceps

  3. Another one to consider - juvenile white damsel, Dischistodus perspicillatus. This has the yellow fins but not the black back linking the two downward stripes. I still favour my first suggestion. Reef Fish of the Tropical Pacific says juvenile A. breviceps are "yellow to brown on lower half"

  4. I also think it is a juvenile Black-banded demoiselle. In Anilao I always found them on muck sites, not on reefs. The top image shows older individuals with little yellow. The bottom, for same dive, a young one with the yellow.

  5. Many thanks, Jim and Tiger Shark! The image may be dreadful, but it made me so curious.
