  1. D100/Subal D10 2:1 setup

Hi all, any recommendations on 2:1 setup for D100/D10? I would assume a 2 x TC and an extension ring would do the trick? Does autofocus work ok still? Not that I use it much..

Would you use the 105 or the 60? Or both? :D

    Thanks,

  2. Cor, I can't help with your question.......I'm sure others here will be able to....just wanted to say that you've got some nice images on your website...good job :D

  3. You can do 2:1 with the 105 and a +4 diopter like the Canon 250D. Make sure you buy a two-element diopter if you want the best quality.

Depth of field is minimal so it is a very tricky proposal. We put the lens in manual focus, bring it to its minimal focus and use it that way.

Don't rely on autofocus since lens tends to "hunt" way too much.

Focus by moving the housing back and forth.

Advantage of diopter: no loss of light.

Disadvantage: working distance is shorterned so you may have to work slowly with skittish subjects.

    Enjoy

  4. Just for clarity - let's say that by 2:1, we mean that the captured image is roughly 18mm across (36mm/2).

With the 105mm and a flat port you can get 2:1 by either using a diopter or a 1.4x teleconverter. The teleconverter will maintain your working distance, but it will also soak up a stop of light. If you can get really close, then the diopter (the one mentioned is about a 1.5) will work great.

  5. With 2:1 i mean exactly what you describe James. I would prefer to maintain working distance. Normally it shouldnt be an issue getting enough light to the subject at that close range.

Would the same go for a 60mm?

I played with a 105 on an F100 with a TC (I thought it was 2x, but i guess it must have been 1.4x). I have seen the depth of field, and I realise it's going to be a challenge :D But the results can be stunning.

  6. And what about wet lens??? It can be quite interesting doing 2:1 and 1:1 in the same dive.....and no lost of light with wet lens!

i was interested in bacscatter one......who can reach 2:1 on a 105.....but I would need some opinion on it ! :?

Does anybody have this one and tried it??? :D

  7. I prefer the dioptre route that the teleconverter. The D100 does not have the world's greatest autofocus and a 2x is going to make it tough - and make the use of focussing lights essential.

This image was taken with 105mm and +4. IM experience pygmies turn away from torches. But even with the +4 the D100 was able to lock on to this moving pygmy. I really doubt a 105mm and 2x would have managed this.

The other advantage of the dioptre is that it wil fit into your existing port for the 105mm.
