Short video of the little critters from Sulawesi in Indonesia. Captured in the Lembeh Strait and in Bunaken National Park. Some marine life in the video: nudibranches, frogfish, mimic octopus, shrimp, leaffish and many more creatures from almost another planet. Music is from Ludovico Einaudi. I hope you enjoy the video.
Equipment: 2 x GoPro Hero 3 Black, BlurFix 3 SO, URPRO Red Filter, 2 x 55mm Marumi Macrolens, 2 x Light & Motion Sola 1200, SRP Tray.
How many hours of video did you have to edit? What software did you use? It's well done nice work indeed
I've just bought my partner a GoPro for Xmas.... just trying to get an idea on what's going to come down the track next
Nice music. But do you have permission to use it?
Thank you!
About 3 evenings. So let's say 12-14 hours. I use PowerDirector 13.
Nice music. But do you have permission to use it?
No but on Vimeo and on Youtube you have the option to acknowledge that the music rights belong to someone else. So the add revenues in front of my videos will go to the holders of the license. i never make money with my videos. Purely a hobby.
Do any of us ever make any real money from underwater images!?!?
True, but i do get a lot of free stuff, like lenses, adapters, filters and mounts...

Excellent! When you were recording with the video lights did you also use the URPRO Red Filter? When shooting with the Marumi Macrolens, did you set the GoPro to Medium or Narrow FOV.
If I shoot macro i never use the redfilter, i do when i shoot wideangle and the lights. The macro video is shot with 2 marumi lenses. GoPro was on medium. You don't have the narrow setting when shooting in 2.7k.
Thanks for the answers! Good to know that you shot it in 2.7k.
And always shoot in 30fps, unless you want slomo. @30fps the shutter is slower so more light will reach the sensor...
Its amazing what you could go with Go Pros these days. Well done. I think this is a great testament to the old adage "a great video is not what camera you have it is more how you use it" .... well something like that.
thanks for sharing
Very nice. I particularly like the photobombing burrfish at 2:05
I feel quite a lot of it is over-exposed. I think it would be improved by making it darker. In particular you have blown-out highlights that would be rescued somewhat by pulling your white level down from 255 to 235 in your NLE with something like a color curve or levels fx.
Does the GoPro itself have a way to control the exposure?
Sorry for chipping in. Not that I know of.
would be nice if the new Go Pro 4 has some manual control. It seems that is not the case. As intented these cameras are used in a limited way. Interesting to see gadget manufacturers keep making "add-on" to stretch the limitation of the thing. Some results are pretty good for what it is. I am guilty of that with every Go Pro I used. I always change something. A new Lens or a filters etc but at the end of the day if something that has to work I get or hire a reliable camcorder for the task. I wouldn't expect miracles from the footage. May be I am just lousy and lazy with post production.
Hi,
The Go Pro only has camera raw and awb off. So no real exposure control. I'll check if it makes any difference later this week.

I see what you mean. I also don't spend weeks behind a computer for post processing. This film I made in 3 evenings. A Go Pro isn't the same as a DSLR, but I think the results you get are amazing for such a small cam.

In Protune Hero 4 offers 5 white balance settings: Auto, 3000k, 5500k, 6500k, & Native.
The slowest shutter speeds for video is 1/frame rate - 1/30sec for 30p, 1/60sec for 60p and so on - and this can be used to limit the amount of motion blur in video frames when one chooses to.
I think Hero 4's 2.7k 48p is very exciting because 1/48sec shutter is plenty good for most situations, 48p is silky smooth, and tests show it's not easy to tell 4k and 2.7k apart during playback at native speeds in theaters.
O boy, that will be a gopro under the Christmass tree for me. 2.7k@48 would be very nice
Yup, GoPro 4 is amazing for the cost - 4k 30p, 2.7k 50/48p, 1080 120p, a super wide lens and an UW housing!
James Cameron on why high frame rates are the future: "A 2K image at 48 frames per second looks as sharp as a 4K image at 24 frames per second ... with one fundamental difference: the 4K/24 image will judder miserably during a panning shot, and the 2K/48 won't."
Seeing is believing! 48p is also better for slow motion than 30/24p when capturing something unexpected!
