  1. Olympus 5050 and intro

    Hi!

This is the second time I have posted and the first went somewhere in cyberspace but not here, but I will try again!

I live in Okinawa and have been diving decades. I have used a Nikonos V on and off since 1985. After buying a Nikon Coolpix 4500 to photograph my artwork, I was sold on digital! I have ordered my housing (PT 015) and am about to order the Olympus 5050 camera as there seems to be problems with the housing and 5060. I have some questions and if anyone would kindly take on a few I would appreciate it very much.

What accessories are a must? I know that different companies offer different packages.

I have cards for my Coolpix and suppose that they would be the same size. Does anyone know for sure?

Do the store bought rechargeable batteries work just as well as the ones the camera stores would sell me?

I like to work Macro as well as wide angle… has anyone used the close up kit that comes as an optional accessory? If so, is it worth the purchase? If not, are there other options?

Will my Nikonos V 105, that has a slave, work with this Oly 5050 set up? I was told that there might be a problem with the Nikonos’ ability to override the pre-flash of the 5050.

Any answers would be greatly appreciated as I continue my research.

    Pura Vida,

    Tarzana

PS I did not know whether to post this in intros/ chat or another...but here it is. If it needs to be moved for more answers, please let me know.

  2. Hi Mr. Zana,

If the posting disappeared, it's probably because it was moved to the appropriate forum.

I'll move this one to Consumer Digicams.

  3. Tanzana,

IMHO you've made the right choice. The 5050 is better for underwater than the 5060.

Compact flash cards are standard and your Coolpix cards will work.

Don't need to buy NiMh batteries from camera store. They are the same.

The supermacro mode on the 5050 works very well. You may want add a lens for really small stuff. Try the camera first.

The camera has a slave flash mode, no preflash, so any optical slave can be triggered. However, you'll have to figure out how to get the light from the flash to your strobe's light sensor.
