  1. Video from 1/30/2015 trip to the Los Coronados Islands aboard Waterhorse Charters. We didn't have clear skies that day, but we did have great viz and fun times with friends!

  2. Fabulous colours and the motion is really smooth. Also the close ups are crisp and steady. Did you shoot in manual all times? In few circumstances there are clipped highlights when the surface appears

  3. Thanks. I was shooting in all manual (including focus) the whole time. I use back button focus to get close and fine-tune the 7-14mm as needed (the peaking is awesome for all of the lenses). Yeah, definitely get blown out highlights - partially unavoidable without a ton of fill light - but also would be nice if the GH4 had auto ISO in manual mode.

  4. I take it you don't trust shutter priority mode??

By the way I watched it on my 55" 4K Tv and even there vimeo looks excellent

  5. Nice work Bob! What color profile did you use? The color turn out well!

Bet 5c is something like standard or scenery and not anything advanced

White balance looks very accurate not sure if this was custom or presets but very good actually looking at the saturation maybe there is even a filter involved?

You're out a nickel on the profile. It was actually shot in Vivid, which, by the way is a mistake I will never ever ever make again with the GH4. I usually shoot in CineV - which I've loved the results from - but somehow I ended up in Vivid and didn't notice until the end of the day. Vivid is much noisier than CineV, and actually produces a ton of Croma-noise, which I hadn't seen with the GH4 so far. It was noticeable above ISO800 (though 1600 was my max) and with ambient light (though mostly disappears like other noise when down sampling from UHD->1080p. Much of the footage I shot below 60fsw (except for the Purple Hydrocoral at 95fsw which I had lit properly) was unusable.

You are right on the filter - I was using a magenta filter on the 7-14mm for dives 2-3. The close-up and macro stuff was on dive #1 and shot with the 12-50mm - no filter. I manually white balance, far more frequently than I check my SPG :-)

I need to try it out actually. I really prefer manual, the exception would be when shooting sea lions or other fish and following them as the light changes.

I watched it this weekend on my main tv too (60") from Vimeo and also thought it looked good there. Haven't had a chance to watch the original on that TV or my 120" projection screen yet :-) I don't own a 4k set yet - would love to see it on a 4k screen - might have to bring the footage into a big box store.

If you put it on YouTube in 4K it would be good if you also leave the original on Dropbox or similar for streaming to see the differences

For what concerns profiles I don't see chroma noise in the video thought it does look pretty saturated but there are no bad hues or other effects that I can notice. Obviously don't know about the deeper footage.

I never use manual on ambient light shots I mostly use it for macro but to be honest sometimes I find more effective to change the lighting until I see decent depth of field and then I lock exposure.

I only had one real macro trip where I could use a tripod and I realised I was not that bothered about corners etc so ended up shooting in shutter priority almost all the time exception was very tiny subjects I shot in manual after failing to focus.

I find manual mode actually more effective when the camera is hand held and I need more working range.

Anyway your video despite the challenges is the best downscale I have seen so far with the GH4 you should be really pleased

  10. Hi Bob, thanks for clearing up the color profile used. In the cloudy day what what you had, CineV or Vivid might work out okay. I tried CineV and one of the comment I got is the "Yellow is too much", when you have yellow color fish swimming around. I suspect the Vivid makes the blue more pop, but anything that have vibrant color might counter the effect.

Yeah I believe CineV is a bit oversaturated for some people's tastes. Future plans for me are to try to dial down that saturation in camera, and also try out the Normal profile for noise levels.

  12. My understanding is that cineV works mostly on contrast not on saturation. Am pretty sure you can obtain the same results if you play with the normal sliders. Generally I tend to reduce contrast and increase saturation may not be the most accurate reproducing but I want to like my footage not shoot a documentary
