  1. Anyone who can give some advice of settings to use with camera to start using doubble trobes in manual with DSLR.

I think of mostly used ISO, shutterspeed, Aperture and then strobe manual power (full to 1/64) and ofcourse about what distance.

  2. Hi!

Like Steve, I'd recommend Martin Edge's book.

The question you ask is quite a tough one to answer as it depends, to a degree, on the equipment you use - and then there is a lot of trial and error involved and experimentation. And that's probably why you haven't had many answers so far!

Most strobes have some form of table which tells you distances based on a given ISO and aperture. If your strobes haven't got that - it might be a sticker which goes on the strobe case- it'd be worth googling to get that info. That would then give you a good starting base. After that it's trial and error time....

As you might know already, shutter speed and aperture have a big impact on the background "colour" of the image, i.e. the faster the shutter or the smaller the aperture, the darker blue the background will become up until black. So the strobe power can be set to a higher output to light the subject but allow you to use a faster speed or smaller aperture to create that darker background - if that's what you want.

I hope this is of some vague help....... good luck with the learning curve. Frustration and delight in equal measures ;-)

  3. Another vote for Martin's book!

It also depends on what kind of a student you are - are you able to read books and then put that into practice? Or is it better for you if someone shows you things in person? Workshops and training days can be very helpful - I attended one with Martin Edge in January and it helped me immensely.

  4. I think Martin's book is great. Do some searches on YouTube and you'll find some videos from him and others that help too.

I took one of Alex Mustard's excellent classes a while back and it was great.

We have quite a few Handbooks and Articles available for free in our Resource Center that might help.

In particular, our Handbook: "Close Focus Wide Angle Photography" has some step-by-step help. We are working on some others, so check back for more.
