Thumbnails and bit rates

  1. I'm shooting video with a Panasonic GH4 and using VLC media player to view it.

The GH4 has four recording formats (AVCHD, MP4, MP4(LPCM) and MOV), and within these formats there is a total of 22 different levels of video quality.

What I've found is that for any video file shot at a bit rate of 100Mbps, VLC provides no thumbnail, just the orange and white icon. Yet for any other bit rate, be it higher or lower than 100Mbps, VLC provides a thumbnail. Unfortunately all the 4K stuff has a bit rate of 100Mbps, so no thumbnails.

Anyone else having this problem and know a possible solution?

  2. What is the purpose of the thumbnails? I don't use VLC that often, only use KMplayer to play back. I know VLC is very powerful and can stream, but that come with price of complexity so I didn't invest my time in learning how to use the advance feature.

When I'm selecting various clips to bring into my editing program I find it a lot easier to do so using thumbnails rather than file names. A file name alone gives me no indication of what's on the cip, whereas a thumbnail often does.
