D7100 white balance

5 posts
  1. I'm hoping someone can help me out here. I have a Nikon D7100 with a Tokina 10-17mm fisheye lens in an Aquatica housing with an 8" dome port. I'm having a lot of trouble with white balancing (I don't have strobes yet). I have done the "pre" setting stuff but it seems whenever it gets a bit darker with depth it won't accept it. I"ve tried slowing down the shutter speed and upping the ISO but still no luck. I've tried putting the focus into manual (didn't actually focus) and still no luck. Has anyone got any pointers on this, other than of course getting strobes.

    Thank you

  2. Hi Harvey!

Shoot in RAW and forget about white balance. There's no difference between the RAW file if you use it or not, so just adjust white balance in Lightroom after.

    Cheers!

  3. I totally agree with Fabian. Shoot RAW on Auto WB and then make any necessary adjustments in Lightroom.

  4. Thanks for the advice guys. Much appreciated.

  5. Hey Harvey,

I completely agree with the two responses here. Shooting RAW is the best thing you can do for yourself.

If you would like to try the custom WB setting anyway, then the best way would be to take a white slate with you, draw a small 1/4" dot on the middle to help the camera focus, and try putting that in front of the lens when setting the custom WB. You can do that just on one dive at 4 different depths and save them as presets so you can use it later.

You may need to zoom in and get a pretty large slate to cover the frame with the 10-17. Or just take your kit lens on one dive and do it with that.
