V-Log is coming to GH4 in October

  1. Not sure how this impact the UW shooters, but they said you would gain 1 to 2 stop of dynamic range when shoot with V-Log. I still don't understand the whole process/workflow of LUTs. I'm sure some people here are looking forward to it:

I wish they would do the same for lower end camera like LX100, after all, the Sony RX100 IV has S-Log2.

  2. I have looked into the RX100 documentation for S-log2. In essence am not sure it's very meaningful if you record in camera but would be useful for an external recorder and heavy duty post processing. The RX100 has other settings for cinema and video that look the same as the GH4 not bad for a compact

  3. I hope Panasonic are flexible with the White Balance controls, if using V-LOG. I appears that Sony restrict the white balance options if using SLOG.

Very exciting times ahead, 12 stops!

I see Andrew at EOSHD has just released some sort of converter type LUT thing to Canon LOG, so you get Canon colours from the GH4 - if thats true - thats immense!

Just wish I had more time in the water these days :(

  4. The Sony S-log2 mode records at very high ISO so although you can white balance there is an increased possibility that you get a white balance error. In my experienced with the RX100 you always get a white balance error anyway!!! More interesting for me are the picture profile cinema. The RX100 did tend to crush blacks and with a better gamma curve there won't be need to play with contrast settings. Overall I like Sony colours better than Panasonic so there is a good chance the RX100 will be a winner at least for wide angle shots

  5. I have read today that the GH4 will not get a V-log update instead Panasonic will release a new model GH4R. There should be an announcement soon meanwhile Panasonic is offering double cashback on the GH4

  6. V-log is available to order for $99 for those in the US. Its tied to the camera serial number.

  7. This is all in all good news for those who know what they are doing with Log footage and good news to see they are eeking out some more life from the GH4.

However.. I still would love to read / discuss about actual use of Log footage underwater, as at the moment I'm trying to nail colors 'in-camera' before hitting FCPX.

I can't find much information on any RED, Alexia, Log-C being filmed underwater, and with the massive WB issues - will we really benefit?

So we get 12 stops, better highlight rolloff, but have they fixed the color science of the camera?

As if I'm honest, I've seen on here canon footage (non-log) underwater and it looks utterly fantastic compared Panasonic colors. If they have - it will be mega.

  8. I don't think the issue can be resolved with slog. Best way forward is to buy canon or Sony. The new a6xxx is due and will have 60p 4K video

  9. Richard, did you have luck with the GH4 1DC LUT thing from EOSHD?

Intercepter, I probably agree there! I'm a bit too invested in m43 lenses and housings to just jump ship now - so will make do with what I've got.. but I think it was Oceanshutter? or someone who filmed in Truk of the bomber and the colours blew me away... no filters, no lights just MWB... I'm off there next month again, so will try again :D

Richard, did you have luck with the GH4 1DC LUT thing from EOSHD?

No, I didn't - I haven't got 'wet' for a while now (teaching the wife to dive, so no camera...) and as I don't have a canon in a housing to compare against I wasn't sure if it was worth all the effort with VLOG being around the corner.

  11. I had good results with filter plus manual white balance. How do you feel about that?

I've got Alex's magic filters (both the Green and Blue water) for the 8mm filter holder - which I've fitted to my 7-14mm so will try those for sure. My recent diving trips have been too deep for the filters, so hoping the relatively shallow Truk wrecks will be okay for ambient lighting / filters. I'm seriously looking at the Cyan bulbs for my Keldans also.

  13. I would be interested in knowing more about the filter holder for the 7-14mm?

  14. The 8mm lens has (as standard) a rear filter holder, which you can retro fit to the 7-14mm:

You can order the part from Panasonic (part number: VXQ1911) if you don't have a 8mm you want take apart (its only 3 screws)

  15. Great tip. I think I will order a few!

  16. Read this thread before you go ahead with that mod.

  17. better disable updates then!

  18. Got my V-Log!!!!! Now I wish they could give that to the LX100 as well :dancing:
