Inon 2000 or z240 for macro

  1. Hi.

I just bought nauticam G7x + nauticam CMC wet lens.

Now i want to buy strobes.

I shot macro almost all the time (95%)

I dunno which one to buy.

I like s2000's size. It's very compact and i think the power is more than enough for macro.

On the otherhand, Z240 is bigger and more powerfull (should be good for wideangle pics).

Do you think, I Will be wasting my money if i buy Z240 instead of inon S2000??

    Waste of power

    Heavy

    Big

And, is the STTL mode at inon Z240 better than S2000 ?

"More clever?" Or they both share the same technology.

    Thank you

    ANDREE

  2. Hi Andree

On the scale of things, the Z240s are neither big nor heavy. And they are very versatile and will grow as you, perhaps, develop your system and, perhaps, move upwards - which we all tend to do. The Z240s will grow with you.

If the cost isn't a major factor, I'd suggest you go with the Z240s.

  3. If you want versatility, Tim is right. The Z240s will do it all.

Having said that, I use the S2000s with my m4/3 system, shooting macro on sTTL about 90% of the time, and am perfectly happy. Their compact size is a real advantage in tight spots. But they are just about useless for wide angle, unless shooting CFWA where you only want to illuminate the foreground and expose for ambient light in the background.

  4. Hi Tim, Hi Manta Ray

    Thank you for the advices

you both are right... basically If I buy inon S2000, I cant shoot wide-angle.

I Live at Indonesia (Lampung-Sumatra Island)

The Visibility in my place is not good. i think it's only around 3-5M

Shooting wide-angle is almost impossible here (the reef condition is bad... due to Blast fishing/dynamite fishing)

I can only enjoy underwater wide-angle photography IF i'm on vacation to Bali

However, I'm really corious about the light quality from Inon S2000.

Is it the same with Inon Z240 ?

    Thank You

    Andree

  5. I'm not quite sure what you mean by "quality" of light in this context. They have nearly the same color temperature (Z240 = 5400K, S2000 = 5500K). Both can use diffusers that warm the light a bit. Obviously the guide numbers are different. The Z240 is more powerful and has two perpendicular flash tubes (versus one on the S2000) so theoretically it has a more even spread of light, but that's not really a concern with macro.

Here's a recent example of mine, straight out of the camera, shot with two S2000 strobes with diffusers, using sTTL:

  6. For the canon compacts you may want to check the D2000. It has all the features of the z240 but less power. The s2000 only works in TTL and manual. The auto mode on the d2000/z240 can be useful sometimes

  7. I'm sorry, i was not clear on the last quote.

    What i mean by "Quality" of the light is;

Before I'm using Canon G7X, i was using Nikon D3X (SeandSea housing) and S&S YS 90dx.

I wasn't too happy with the macro picture from that combo.

I think the flash was too harsh.

    Then I bought S&S YS250.

The result was so much better. the light is "softer" more natural. (maybe do to the ring tube of the flash at YS 250 ?? I really hv no idea)

Today, i don't want to experience the same thing.

I have never tried inon flash before.

However, looking at your anemone's crab picture, I think it's nice :) (Nice picture bro ^_^)

OK... i think I know what to buy now

    Thank a lot guys

    Andree

  8. Hi V_kids, salam dari jakarta :)

I used one S2000 (borrowed from a friend) for macro in Raja Ampat, and for noobs like me, I like it very much. TTL works flawlessly and it is very compact. this is one of the result with S2000 (one strobe, stacked UCL165, sony rx100ii in nauticam):

will one z240 works for wide angle?

Not surprisingly, it depends how you use it.

If you are trying to light the whole scene, then no. But then hardly anything will other than a battery of strobes. But if you want to fill light something in the foreground and set your exposure for ambient light for the rest of the scene it should be fine. I have two Z240s but often only use one to light something in the corner of an image, and the rest by ambient light. If I use two, it's often, say on a wall, that I'll switch the second strobe into a similar positions to the first and use two strobes to light the same side of the image.

An example is attached - showing the soft corals light by strobe on the right; the rest is light by ambient light.
