D100: Trap Focus Trick

to paraphrase for the D100:

set CSM menu item 14 (AE-L/AF-L) to "AF-ON"

 

front focus selector to S

 

focus using the AE-L/AF-L button on something the same distance as your expected subject

 

back off or point in alternate direction

point in the direction of your expected subject

hold down (lock with a cable release or finger ) the shutter

It looks like these tips are for Autofocus. This is the technique that I wrote up last September after getting my midwater squid photos with the 105.

I'll try them in Manual focus this evening w/ the D100 and see what happens.
